Entreculturas is a non-governmental organization for development cooperation (NGO) promoted by the Society of Jesus. It works for education and development of peoples from the conviction that education is a fundamental human right, excluding no one. It is a member of the international movement of popular education Fe y Alegria which is in 17 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, besides 3 in Africa and 2 in Europe. Its main management body is a board of trustees with members linked to education and social work and to the Society of Jesus.[1]
Activities
In Latin America and Africa, Entreculturas supports initiatives that promote education of the disadvantaged, ranging from teacher training and building classrooms and vocational training centres, to supporting educational programs on radio, to nutritional programs. These educational activities are complemented by the promotion of community initiatives to facilitate citizenship, full inclusion in social life, and democratic participation. The main partner of Entreculturas in Latin America is Fe y Alegria which began as a popular proposal for quality education in Venezuela in 1955 and today includes 1.2 million students in 14 countries.
Entreculturas is a member of the International Federation Fe y Alegría. In South Africa and North Africa Entreculturas promotes education in refugee camps. In January 2016, following a weak response by governments to the plight of refugees in the Mediterranean area, Entreculturas along with other sectors of the Society of Jesus launched the campaign Hospitality. In Spain it promotes educational campaigns, communication, research, and advocacy activities to sensitize Spanish society to the worthy cause of education for all people.
More recently Entreculturas launched the educational campaign "Igual-da?" whose main objectives are:
- to raise awareness of the phenomena of exclusion associated with inequality of opportunity, especially in the exercise of the right to education;
- to encourage reflection and understanding of equity and inclusion as strategies and policies for equal opportunities, emphasizing education;
- to promote attitudes and values that facilitate active participation at the local and global level in the transformation of exclusion processes, and to connect with other social initiatives having a similar purpose;
- to hire staff to perform all these actions, but to rely especially on the work of volunteers integrated among the 27 delegations spread throughout the Spanish world.
Of special note for raising awareness and education is the Youth Solidarity Network. This was born in Andalusia in 1999 and strives to maintain a network of young people ages 14 to 18 who perform charity activities in their schools and communities. The network has spread to Andalusia, Asturias, Castilla y Leon, Madrid, Murcia, Galicia, Valencia and La Rioja. Not to leave out older boys and girls, the 18 and Over Network was created in Andalusia, which held its first national meeting in Valencia on 11-13 March 2011, attended by over-18 youth from Andalusia, Murcia, and Valencia. Entreculturas has an educational platform called "Redec" which offers a host of functions and services for both girls and boys in the 18 and Over Network, as well as for families, children, schools, and educators, fostering awareness and education for development.[2]
