The film is a compelling depiction of war in Afghanistan, based on actual events: the uprising of Soviet captives taken place in Badaber, 24 km from the Peshawar, Pakistan. A later version of the film, Escape from Afghanistan, was released by Corman with an English language soundtrack as a direct-to-video production in 2002.
