Ethiopia competed in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, sending a single skier. Robel Teklemariam intended to compete in both cross-country skiing and in alpine skiing, but elected to only enter cross-country events. Teklemarariam is the first Ethiopian to compete in a Winter Olympics, having learned to ski while attending school in the United States.[3]
