Euronews Persian Service

Launching Ceremony of EEuronews Persian at EU Parliament, Brussels, Oct 2010

Euronews Persian Service is the Persian-language section of the pan-European television news channel Euronews.

The Persian section of the France-based TV was launched in late October 2010 and broadcast from Lyon by satellite and cable as well as online, like the station's existing channels in nine other languages.

The launch follows Euronews’ successful bid for a competitive call for tender from the European Union on December 21, 2009 in Brussels. The channel and the European Commission signed a service agreement to extend its programming to include Persian.

From its launch, Persian Euronews is available on five satellites from its distribution network: Eutelsat Hot Bird 6, Arabsat Bad-4, Nilesat 101, Asiasat 5 and Eurobird 1.

On October 27, 2010, the launching ceremony for the Persian-language service of Euronews was held at the European Parliament in Brussels. Two staff members of the Iranian Embassy in Brussels were invited to attend. This issue created a wave of anger in Persian communities in Europe and the United States. Based on a report by Radio Zamaneh in Amsterdam, Mr. Philippe Cayla, Chairman and CEO of Euronews, no members of the Iranian Embassy in Brussels were invited by the organization. Mr. Cayla also said that it seemed that staff from Iran's Embassy participated in the ceremony because of their contacts in the European Parliament.[1]
