◄2014 2016

The Eurovision Young Musicians 2016 will be the 18th edition of the Eurovision Young Musicians contest. Candidates representing each participating European Broadcasting Union (EBU) member state will participate and perform live on 3 September 2016 in Cologne, Germany. For a second consecutive time, German public broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) will be the host broadcaster for the event. The candidates will accompanied by the WDR Symphony Orchestra.

Location

For more details on the host city, see Cologne.

It was announced on 9 December 2014, that the 2016 contest will take place in Cologne, Germany on 3 September 2016.[1][2] This will be the second consecutive time that the German city have hosted the Young Musicians, with the last being the Eurovision Young Musicians 2014.[3] It will also be the third time that Germany have been the host nation, with their first in Berlin for the Eurovision Young Musicians 2002.[4]

Provisional list of participants

The following countries have expressed their provisional interest for participation in the 2016 contest. The semi final elimination stage of the contest will return this year,[5] with the first semi final taking place on 28 August 2016 and the second on 29 August, the final will take place on 3 September 2016.[6] However the semi-finals were later removed due to the low number of participating countries.

This year, only 10 countries will participate in the contest, which is the smallest number of countries since 1984.[7] San Marino will make their debut at the Eurovision Young Musicians. Greece, Moldova, Netherlands, Portugal and Hungary (country was originally on the participation list, but later dropped out of the competition for unknown reasons) withdrew from this year's competition.[8]
