Extreme Rules (2016) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It will take place on May 22, 2016, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.[1] It was originally supposed to take place on May 1, 2016, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois; however, it switched dates and venues with Payback.[2] It will be the eighth event under the Extreme Rules chronology.

Background

Extreme Rules will consist of professional wrestling matches that involved wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds or storylines that play out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown. Wrestlers will portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.[3][4]

At Payback, AJ Styles faced Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Styles defeated Reigns first by countout and then disqualification, but to allow for a definitive champion, the match was restarted, first by Shane McMahon and then Stephanie McMahon, before Reigns finally scored a pinfall over Styles to retain the title. Upon the conclusion of the match, Vince, Shane and Stephanie McMahon agreed that Styles would get a rematch at Extreme Rules in an Extreme Rules match.[5]

At Payback, The Vaudevillains vs. Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady ended in a no contest after Enzo Amore suffered a legitimate injury, which was later found to be a concussion,[6] in a #1 contender match for the WWE Tag Team Championship.[5] The following night on Raw, The Vaudevillains was awarded a title match against WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day at Extreme Rules.[7]

At Payback, WWE Women's Champion Charlotte defeated Natalya in a controversy when Charles Robinson called for the bell when Natalya didn't tap out when Charlotte had her in the sharpshooter, similar to the 1997 Montreal Screwjob at Survivor Series.[5] The following night on Raw, it was announced that Charlotte would defend the title against Natalya in a Submission match with Ric Flair banned from ringside.[7]
