EyeEm is a global community and marketplace for real photography. With a community of more than 15 million photographers and 60 million images, EyeEm is a place for photographers of any ability to share, interact, and learn more about photography. Through EyeEm’s photo Missions, Market and global exhibitions, the community showcases their work to brands, individuals and any other third parties interested in licensing images. Through EyeEm Vision, EyeEm's proprietary deep learning computer vision framework, images are automatically given keywords and ranked based on aesthetic quality. This technology recognizes over 20,000 concepts in photos and furthers EyeEm's mission to automatically categorize, rank and surface the most relevant content.

History

In 2010, Florian Meissner was in New York City when he had his SLR camera and equipment stolen on the subway. He was left with nothing else to capture images with, so a friend loaned him an old iPhone. He then realized the level of quality of images possible with smartphones as well as the number of online communities sharing their mobile photography. From there, he started to develop ideas around what a professional platform for mobile photos could look like.

The company was founded in January 2010 and by March of the same year it had its first call for submissions for a mobile photography competition. The winners and runners-up were part of an exhibition that took place in Berlin in June 22 of the same year.[1]

During the beta period, EyeEm was an iPhone app only and it was called EYE'EM, and managed to have more than 5,000 users from 79 countries.[2] The app was launched in August 2011 for Android phones and iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

In September 2015, EyeEm launched EyeEm Vision, its deep learning computer vision framework that recognizes concepts and ranks aesthetics of images.

Funding

The company has raised $24 million to date in funding from Valar Ventures, Earlybird Ventures, Passion Capital, Wellington Partners, Atlantic Labs and Open Ocean Capital. EyeEm was incorporated in Berlin, Germany,[3] in February 2011 by founders Florian Meissner, Lorenz Aschoff, Gen Sadakane, and Ramzi Rizk.
