The 1984 Tournament of the Americas, known now as the FIBA Americas Championship, was a basketball championship hosted by Brazil from 15 24 May 1984. The games were played in Sao Paulo. This FIBA Americas Championship was to earn the three berths allocated to the Americas for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and five berths for the 1986 FIBA World Championship in Moscow. The United States did not participate in the tournament, as the team had already claimed a berth in the Olympics as the host team. Brazil won the tournament by going undefeated in the round robin. Canada and Uruguay claimed the other two Olympic berths.
Qualification
Eight teams qualified during the qualification tournaments held in their respective zones in 1982 and 1983; Canada qualified automatically since they are one of only two members of the North America zone. Venezuela withdrew from the tournament. The teams formed a single group of nine teams.
