Faceparty is a global dating website, popular mainly in the United Kingdom and United States.
Features
Faceparty members can make a free profile, to which they can upload pictures and videos. Members can search for each other by keywords, age, gender, sexuality and location. They communicate with one another by sending instant messages.
Faceparty is free to join, with a monthly fee for users who wish to upgrade their profiles and send more messages.[2] For a larger fee, users of the site aged 18 or over can gain access to the site's age-restricted content.[3]
History
Faceparty celebrated its millionth member in 2003. She was flown to London with her boyfriend for a surprise party attended by celebrities including model Katie Price, Shaun Ryder, Bez from the Happy Mondays and puppets from the television show Rainbow.[4][5]
In January 2004, Faceparty had grown to become the 9th most searched-for keyword on Google, in the UK.[6] By 2005, Faceparty was serving 1.5 billion web pages per month.[7] In April 2006, Faceparty had six million users in the United Kingdom.[8] By 2007 the site's popularity was declining.[9]
In June 2008, three men were sentenced to jail at the High Court in Paisley for sexual abuse of a 13-year-old schoolgirl who they had contacted through Faceparty.[10] A month earlier, the site announced that it had deleted a "huge" number of user profiles whose age was listed as 36 or older, explaining it as part of a government requirement to check users against the sex offenders register. Faceparty cited the case of "some pretty serious crimes" committed by older users of the site.[11]
