The Faculty of Science is one of the nine academic faculties of the University of Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka.[1] The faculty was established in October 1974 as the Faculty of Science of the Jaffna Campus of the University of Sri Lanka. The faculty has seven departments and its current dean is Professor S. Srisatkunarajah.[2] As at 31 December 2011 the faculty had 2,469 undergraduate students and 142 academic staff (121 permanent, 21 temporary).[3][4]

History

The Jaffna Campus of the University of Sri Lanka was established with effect from 1 August 1974.[5] The campus started functioning in October 1974 with two faculties: Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Science.[5][6] The Faculty of Humanities was based at Parameshwara College in Thirunelveli whilst the Faculty of Science was based at Jaffna College in Vaddukoddai.[5][6] P. Kanagasabapathy, Head of the Department of Mathematics at the Peradeniya Campus of the University of Sri Lanka, was appointed the first Dean of the Faculty of Science.[5][6] The faculty initially had only one department: Mathematics & Statistics.[5]

The Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics were started in April 1975.[7][8]

The facilities at Jaffna College proved to be inadequate and construction of a new building for the faculty at the Thirunelveli site began in 1975.[6] The faculty left Jaffna College and moved into the Natural Science Block at Thirunelveli in June 1978.[5][6]

The Jaffna Campus was elevated to university status on 1 January 1979 with the creation of the University of Jaffna.[5]

Three Physics Block was completed in September 1980, Mathematics and Statistics Block in 1985 and Chemistry Block in 1988.[6] The Department of Computer Science was started in 1991.[9] The Department of Fisheries was added in June 2009.[10]
