Fairfax New Zealand Limited is one of the largest media companies operating in New Zealand, and is part of Australia's Fairfax Media.

Fairfax established the operation on 1 July 2003 with the purchase of the publishing assets of Independent Newspapers Ltd (INL). These assets include nine daily newspapers, such as The Dominion Post and Christchurch's The Press, two national Sunday papers, a stable of magazines with particular strength in the lifestyle category, a magazine publishing business and an internet operation. Fairfax also publishes over 60 community newspapers throughout the country. These assets joined those of the parent company, whose mastheads include the prestigious Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review.

History of Independent Newspapers

Independent Newspapers evolved out of the Wellington Publishing Company Limited which was founded in 1906 to publish Wellington’s morning daily newspaper, The Dominion. Through a series of acquisitions it became New Zealand’s largest media company, owning nine daily newspapers and two Sunday newspapers, an extensive stable of free community papers, a range of magazines, an internet operation, and a magazine distribution business. These operations were sold to Australian publisher Fairfax Holdings Ltd (now Fairfax Media), effective 1 July 2003.

INL’s acquisition activity commenced in the 1970s including the purchase of Truth (NZ) Ltd, Wellington’s evening paper The Evening Post (which merged with The Dominion in 2002 to form The Dominion Post), the Evening Standard (Manawatu), The Southland Times, The Press, The Nelson Evening Mail, The Marlborough Express, The Timaru Herald and most of the newspapers owned by NZ News Ltd. The latter incorporated the Auckland Star, The Sunday Star and New Zealand’s largest group of free community papers. In 1990 INL purchased Gordon and Gotch, an Australian and New Zealand magazine distribution business, although it subsequently sold the Australian operation in 1999.

INL had significant links with News Corporation, the Australian-based global media company. The relationship dated back to 1964 when News purchased a 29.8% stake in the Wellington Publishing Company.
