Social stigma of obesity

The social stigma of obesity has created negative psychosocial impacts and has caused disadvantages for overweight and obese people.[1][2] The social stigma often spans one's entire life, starting from a young age and lasting into adulthood.[2] Several studies from the United States along with studies from the University of Marburg and University of Leipzig have shown that some people consider obese people as weak-willed, lazy, and less intelligent compared to their thinner counterparts.[2]

Overweight and obese people marry less often, have fewer educational and employment opportunities, and on average earn a lesser income than thin people.[2]
