Fauzia Yasmin (Born in 1942 in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, also known as Fauzia Khan) was a popular vocal artiste of the then East Pakistan during the 1960s, and of Bangladesh during the 1970s, and 1980s. Her father, Mr. Lutfar Rahman, belonged to former Provincial Civil Service of British India and her mother Begum Mouluda Khatun was also a vocal artiste taking music lessons from musician Ustaad Kader Baksh.
Musical career
Fauzia Yasmin took music lessons from the musicians Ustaad Yousuf Khan Qureshi, and Ustaad Mohammad Fazlul Huq. She became a vocal artiste of the then Radio Pakistan in 1960. She took part in National Television programs since 1965. She used to perform Modern Bangla songs, Nazrul Sangeet, Folk and Rhyme songs along with Urdu Geet and Ghazals. She was also a playback singer and rendered voice in a number of films. She participated in musical conferences and soirees. She visited a number of countries including Pakistan, England, and Australia, and took part in music programs.[1]
Her popular songs include Aj Putuler Gaye Holud, Mon To Noy Aar Ayna, Ami Nupur Pora Jhorna Dhara and many more.
She, along with her husband Mobarak Hossain Khan, initiated a popular TV musical program on NTV (Bangladesh), Bajo Ebong Bajao in 2008, which featured an innovative method of Sangat (co-performance) of Raag based Nazrul Sangeet with Sitar, Sarod, and other classical instruments.[2]
Award and recognition
Fauzia Yasmin won Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy[3] (National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts of Bangladesh) annual 'Gunijon Shambardhana' (গুণীজন সম্বর্ধনা) in 2006, and Alakta Literary Council Award (1987) (অলক্ত সাহিত্য পুরষ্কার).[4]
Academic career
Fauzia Yasmin earned her Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Bangla from the University of Dhaka and joined in teaching profession in T. and T. College, Dhaka, in 1971, until her voluntary retirement in 1999.
Family background
She is the second among five sisters. Her three other sisters Farida Yasmin, Nilufar Yasmin, and Sabina Yasmin are also vocal artists in Bangladesh.
Fauzia Yasmin is married to Mr. Mobarak Hossain Khan, a musicologist, musician and a writer, who retired from Government Service as the Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts). She is the mother of one daughter, Reenat Fauzia [5] and two sons Dr. Tareef Hayat Khan,[6] and Tanim Hayat Khan.
