Finsland is a village and a former municipality in Vest-Agder county in Norway. It is located in the present-day municipality of Songdalen.
Name
The municipality (originally the parish) was named Finsland. The name comes from the old "Finsland" farm which is situated by the river Finnsåna, which flows into the Mandalselva. There are also farms nearby called Finsdal and Finsådal. The first element is the word finne means "wilderness" or "remote". The second element land is the same as the word for "land".[1]
History
The municipality of Finsland was created in 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). On 1 January 1964, Finsland was merged with Greipstad and the Eikeland krets part of Øvrebø to form the new municipality of Songdalen. At the same time, the area of Kleveland bru (with 34 inhabitants) was moved to Marnardal municipality. Prior to the merger, the population of Finsland was 831.[2]
