Fireproof Studios is a British video game company formed in 2008 and based in Guildford.

The company is best known for the BAFTA award winning[1] and multi-million selling[2] The Room which it published in 2012, the game was developed by sub-label Fireproof Games.[3]

History

Fireproof Studios was formed in 2008 by six members of staff from Criterion Games, they had met in 2004 whilst working on Burnout 3 and developed the idea of working as a team during work on Burnout Paradise.[4][5]

The studio was created to be a freelance art studio and to eventually create its own games.[5] Fireproof credits LittleBigPlanet creator Media Molecule with being a major help during its first two years. Media Molecule outsourced the art creation for LittleBigPlanet's downloadable content to Fireproof. Media Molecule called upon Fireproof for art for LittleBigPlanet 2 as well. Fireproof worked closely with Guerrilla Games to provide the art for multiplayer levels within Killzone Shadow Fall and Killzone: Mercenary. Over the past couple of years Fireproof have also contributed art and assets to Ridge Racer Unbounded, the DJ Hero series, and Kinect Sesame Street TV.[4]

In January 2012, Fireproof set up an internal team called Fireproof Games to start development of their first video game, The Room.

The game took six months to develop and was released in September 2012 by Fireproof Games.[5] It was featured as editor's choice on its release and later named the iPad Game of the Year for 2012.[6] At the 2012 British Academy Video Games Awards, The Room won the award for Best British Game, as well as being nominated in the Mobile & Handheld, Artistic Achievement and Debut Game categories.[1]

Following the success of the first game they began development of a sequel - The Room Two, which was released on iPad on 12 December 2013.[6] Fireproof released The Room Two to iPhone and Android devices in early 2014.
