Fitzgerald High School is the local high school in Fitzgerald, Georgia and is the home of the Purple Hurricane. FHS serves students in grades 9-12. Its superintendent is Nancy Whidden and its principal is Stacey Bell. Assistant principals include Isom Harmon III, Dr. Gail Stokes, and James Wells. Fitzgerald High School is currently involved in the Title I Plan.[2]
Athletics
Fitzgerald High School competes in the Class AA division of the Georgia High School Association in football, cross country (boys' and girls'), softball, competitive cheerleading, basketball (boys' and girls'), wrestling, riflery, baseball, track (boys' and girls'), soccer (boys' and girls'), tennis (boys' and girls'), competitive weightlifting, and golf (boys' and girls'). The Purple Hurricane Athletic Department also fields football cheerleading and basketball cheerleading squads.
The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane Athletic Department staff includes Paul Stokes (Athletic Director), Jason Strickland, Jason Wicker, Neal Burkhart, Scotty Ward, Will Oliver, Jason McDonald, Andy Dent, Marcie Smith, Stacey Powell, Cheryl Turnmire, Kenneth Rosier, Elvin Anderson, Randall Shoultz, Roger Merritt, Cynthia Jacobs, Thomas Leeroy Dorsett, Roy Bryan, Steve Dennard, and Will Winston.
Band
The FHS band is currently run by Jonathan Kelly. The previous band director was Avery Cooper and before that was John D. Newsome, who now directs the Cook County High School band. The band is relatively small, but has won many awards.
Past accomplishments
FHS has won 4 state championship weightlifting titles under the direction of coach Mike Booth.
Under Angela Davis, the FHS cheerleaders have won regional titles for ten consecutive years and a cheerleading state championship in 2005.
