History
Early years
Hildebrand started the solo project Foxes in Fiction in April 2005 while still in high school,[1] and began to take the project more seriously in 2008, while inspired by artists such as Brian Eno and Atlas Sound.[1] He started working on his debut album around 2009, while attending an art university in Toronto, Ontario.[2]
In 2010 Hildebrand founded Orchid Tapes while living in his apartment in downtown Toronto.[3] The label was intended as a vehicle for his solo project,[1] which he was still working on at the time.[2] The label has since released a number of indie pop and indie rock compilations, and primarily releases music on cassette tape, on limited edition vinyl, or as free downloads.[4] The label's first release was the Foxes in Fiction album Swung from The Branches, released on February 19, 2010.[4] The album became a surprise hit on the internet,[3] eventually being covered positively by Pitchfork.[5]
Move to New York
In 2012 Hildebrand moved from Toronto to Queens, settling down in the neighborhood of Ridgewood.[1] Brian Vu joined Orchid Tapes later that year,[2] helping expand the roster and the label's scope, which introduced Hildebrand to a number of future collaborators.[6] He occasionally masters albums for other musicians on the label, including Coma Cinema.[7]
Foxes in Fiction has also toured and performed both in Canada and the United States. Among those venues are showcases organized by Orchid Tapes.[1][3][8]
