Friedrich Wilhelm University

Historically, there have been three universities called Friedrich Wilhelm University (German: Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität) in the state of Prussia:

• The first University of Berlin was named Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität from 1828 until 1949, when the new communist regime changed it to Humboldt University of Berlin (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), its current name.
• The University of Bonn is still called Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn officially. Founded in 1815 by Frederick William III of Prussia, it was renamed in his honour in 1840.
• The University of Wrocław was established as the Schlesische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Breslau following the Napoleonic Wars in 1811. Its name was changed after Breslau became part of Poland in 1945.
