Functional Ecology is a bimonthly peer-reviewed scientific journal on organismal ecology publishing papers on physiological, behavioural, and evolutionary ecology, emphasising an integrative approach. The scope of the journal has changed over time. A recent editorial stated that the journal is increasing its coverage of community, evolutionary, and ecosystem ecology.[1] The journal was established in 1987 and is published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the British Ecological Society. The editor-in-chief is Charles Fox, (University of Kentucky).

The journal is abstracted and indexed in Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Awareness in Biological Sciences, Current Contents/Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Sciences, the Science Citation Index, The Zoological Record, and BIOSIS Previews. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2012 impact factor of 4.860, ranking it 19th among 136 journals in the category "Ecology".[2]
Types of papers
The journal publishes the following types of papers:
- Standard Papers - a typical experimental, comparative or theoretical paper
- Reviews - syntheses of topics of broad ecological interest
- Perspectives - short articles presenting new ideas (without data) intended to stimulate scientific debate
- Special Features - a collection of manuscripts, typically Reviews or Perspectives, on a single theme
The journal also produces podcasts on a semi-regular basis, usually focussing on a recent article.
