Fune (舟, Ship) is the tenth studio album by P-Model and the first by its "Revised" lineup.
Overview
Following the dissolution of the "Defrosted" lineup of P-Model, bandleader Susumu Hirasawa focused on his solo career, releasing Aurora and performing accompanying shows alongside it. Some of them featured a backing band, and some of its members were sought by Hirasawa to join P-Model. Drummer Wataru Kamiryo, who first worked with Hirasawa as the drummer of Soft Ballet in two special guest shows, agreed to join. Keyboardist Takanori "TAKA" Yamaguchi, whose second solo album featured Hirasawa as producer and guitarist, declined the offer; while his mentor Kenji Konishi, a friend of Hirasawa's since the late '70s who gigged with P-Model and him intermittently since 1983, either by himself or with his band 4-D, and also appeared on some of his solo shows as backing synth player, accepted with surprise. The lineup was supposed to debut with a show in September 23, 1994 at the Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall, but due to TAKA's refusal, the band's return had to be postponed, while the show was changed to the Hirasawa solo ERROR ENGINE Hirasawa Three Acts in Three Hours (ERROR ENGINE 平沢三幕三時間, ERROR ENGINE Hirasawa Sanmakusan Jikan).[1]
To fill out the fourth member role, Konishi convinced Hajime Fukuma, a chat room friend of his that played on the new wave band Controlled Voltage, to join the band.[2] While Hirasawa and Kamiryo hailed from and were and centered in Tokyo, Konishi and Fukuma did so from Osaka. This "Revised" (改訂) lineup debuted with two shows at the I3 Days'94 festival in December 1994, one in Osaka and the other in Tokyo, mainly playing beat-heavy rearrangements of "Defrosted" songs. A latter concert the following year, Ending Error, was centered around cuts from the pre-freeze incarnations, while also previewing three songs from Fune ("Welcome", "Fune" and "Tide").
The recording of Fune started immediately after Hirasawa finished his solo album Sim City. His main technological interest of the time had switched from the Amiga to the internet, and that led with the band experimenting with it, working from home studios and sending audio files back and forth through e-mail. Hirasawa's then current interest in Thai culture also influenced the album, which featured occasional verses in Thai. Talking about the album's concept, which involves the band dividing itself into two parties to sail through the internet and connect the seemingly opposing ideals of the spiritual and the technological, Hirasawa commented "No, honestly, I think this might be the most easy-to-understand release in P-Model's history of works. The overall intended message is 'Come over here, it's super interesting, I'm already into it too, you're definitely gonna get hooked!'; a passionate invitation to the computer network".[3] Konishi got equal creative control in the band, with his rhythmic style of songwriting, coupled with Kamiryo's use of an acoustic drum kit, leading to a beat-heavy album. The band's overall sound also switched, due to Konishi and Fukuma using analog synths and assorted electronics (credited as "Systems"), as well the heavy layering of tracks.

It, alongside the Ending Error show, provided an early glimpse into the then in the works album. A single featuring a slightly different mix of "Wrecked Ship Saksit re-mix" was released as a special gift to consumers of SYUN releases, and is the last P-Model release pressed on vinyl.
