Catapult centres

Catapult centres are organisations set up by Innovate UK (previously the Technology Strategy Board) in the United Kingdom to promote research and development, innovation through business led collaboration between scientists, engineers and market opportunities.^[1][2][3]

Current centres:

• Cell Therapy - based at Guy's Hospital, London
• Digital Catapult - based in Kings Cross, London
• Future Cities - based in Borough, London and led by David King
• High Value Manufacturing - based across 7 Technology and Innovation centres working with companies of all sizes to bridge the gap in – and accelerate the activity between – technology concept and commercialisation^[4]
  • Including: The National Composites Centre - based in Bristol
• Offshore Renewable Energy - wind, wave and tidal power - based in Glasgow
• Satellite Applications - based at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Oxfordshire
• Transport Systems - based in Milton Keynes
• Energy Systems - based in Birmingham
• Precision Medicine - based in Cambridge

Further centres will be established in 2016:^[5]

• Compound Semiconductor Applications - based in Wales

Funding

Each Catapult centre is expected to raise funds equally from three sources: business-funded R&D contracts; collaborative applied R&D projects from UK and Europe (H2020), funded jointly by the public and private sectors, also won competitively; and core UK public funding.
