Garbage Patch State

"The Garbage Patch State – Wasteland" is an environmental artwork by Maria Cristina Finucci, where the concrete and tangible image of the Garbage Patch State, invented by the artist, is used to raise awareness about the serious environmental hazard of the same name, caused by the dispersion of plastic debris in the oceans.

Wasteland is a transmedia project carried out under the patronage of UNESCO [1] and the Italian Ministry of the Environment[2] through a cycle of installations, performances, videos and other initiatives designed by the artist to create the image of the Garbage Patch State.

History

The Garbage Patch State was born at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on 11 April 2013.[3] A few months later, its National Pavilion was set up in the courtyard of Ca’ Foscari University during the 55th edition of the Venice Biennale.[4] The work then continued its journey in Madrid with an installation on the Gran Via as a collateral event of the ARCO fair,[5] followed by the opening of the Embassy at the MAXXI museum in Rome on the occasion of the Garbage Patch State’s first National Holyday.[6]

Collaborations

This ongoing project has enjoyed the collaboration of academic institutions such as Ca’ Foscari University of Venice,[7] the universities La Sapienza and Roma Tre in Rome,[8][9] università Roma Tre,[10] and the European Institute of Design in Madrid.[11] The project’s main partners were ENI (for the installations in Paris, Rome, and Venice) and ENDESA (for the installation in Madrid).

Awards

For the commitment shown in her environmental artwork The Garbage Patch State, Maria Cristina Finucci was awarded the “Golden Apple” of the 26th edition of the Marisa Bellisario Prize, “Donne Ad Alta Quota” (“High-Flying Women”).[12] Maria Cristina Finucci was also awarded the prize “Civiltà dell’Acqua” (“Civilization of Water”) in 2013[13]
