The Gatestone Institute, formerly Stonegate Institute and Hudson New York, is a "non-partisan, not-for-profit international policy council and think tank based in New York City" with a specialization in strategy and defense issues.[2][3] Gatestone was founded in 2012 by Nina Rosenwald, who serves as its president.[4][5] Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John R. Bolton is its chairman.[6][7][8]

Gatestone publicizes the writings of authors as diverse as Alan Dershowitz, Robert Spencer, Khaled Abu Toameh, and Harold Rhode.[9]

About the organization

The organization describes itself as a "non-partisan, not-for-profit international policy council and think tank is dedicated to educating the public about what the mainstream media fails to report."[10] The organization believes that traditional news outlets conduct insufficient and, as a result, misleading reporting on critical issues, and thus it distributes its own information about events in the Middle East and Muslim populations in other parts of the world.[10][11][12][13][14]

Funding

Gatestone Institute says it is funded by private donors and foundations.[15]

Board of Advisors

According to the Gatestone Institute website, the organization is currently forming its Board of Advisors.[1] Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, former Central Intelligence Agency Director R. James Woolsey, Jr.,[16] Hebrew University professor Petra Heldt[17] and publisher Ahmed Charai[18] are the first individuals to be named to the board.[1]

Board of Governors (United States)

According to its website, the organization is currently forming a Board of Governors[10] consisting of former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John R. Bolton serving as chairman; American Islamic Forum for Democracy founder M. Zuhdi Jasser; Huffington Post writer Lawrence Kadish;[19] British neoconservative writer and commentator Douglas Murray; and Director of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and philanthropist Ingeborg Rennert, wife of investor Ira Rennert.[20]

Distinguished Senior Fellows

The Gatestone Institute's website contains a list of "Distinguished Senior Fellows," which include Khaled Abu Toameh, Gordon G. Chang, Salim Mansur, Fiamma Nirenstein, Raheel Raza, and Harold Rhode.[1]

Analyses

Criticism

The Council on American–Islamic Relations [21] and progressive/liberal think tanks and political magazines such as the Institute for Policy Studies,[22] The Nation,[9] and the Center for American Progress have categorized Nina Rosenwald and the Gatestone Institute as anti-Muslim.

Responses

Practicing Muslim activists (some, affiliated with the Gatestone Institute) have come to her defense in response to this accusation. Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, founder and president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, said, "It goes without saying, but to those who may not know Nina, and having known her now for many years, it is clear to me that she has the highest respect for Muslims who love their faith, love God, and take seriously our Islamic responsibility to defeat the global jihad and its Islamist inspiration." In response to anti-Muslim allegations made by the Council on American–Islamic Relations toward Rosenwald, writer and film maker Raheel Raza said, "If Muslims guided by CAIR could take the time to read and reflect on efforts of people like Nina, they would broaden their horizons and gain a lot of insights into the betterment of Muslims."[21]
