Gawler Bypass Road is a major north-south route in the outer northern suburbs of the city of Adelaide, South Australia. It has the national designation of National Highway A20 north of the Max Fatchen Expressway, while south of this intersection it has the state designation of A52.[1]

It is a freeway standard route connecting Main North Road to the Sturt Highway, bypassing Gawler. Major exits include Two Wells Road, Mallala Road and the Barrier Highway known as Main North Road. Each of these exits also have minor roads leading into Gawler.

The route was built in the mid-1980s in an attempt to redirect traffic on the national highway out of Gawler town centre.

Northern Expressway

Main article: Northern Expressway

The Northern Expressway is a 31 kilometre long freeway grade road, with construction on the expressway finishing in 2010. It begins at a freeway style interchange on the Gawler Bypass Road and heads south west towards Port Wakefield Road (National Highway A1) through the Adelaide suburbs of Angle Vale, Penfield and Macdonald Park. The new road was built to four-lane standard to provide a faster route between Adelaide and Gawler, whilst reducing the amount of traffic on Main North Road and Salisbury Highway. The Northern Expressway consists of 23 km of new road, in addition to an 8 km upgrade of the existing Port Wakefield Road.[2]
