General Paper
General Paper (GP) is an H1 academic subject at A Level in the Singapore education system. All students in Junior Colleges and Millennia Institute in Singapore have to study this subject, with the exception of those studying Knowledge and Inquiry. The examination for General Paper consists of 2 parts: Paper 1 - Essay Writing and Paper 2 - Comprehension.
Paper 1 comprises twelve questions which cover historical, social, cultural, economic, political, philosophical topics, literature and language, topics of local interest and global concern. Students select one question out of 12 and complete the paper in ninety-minutes, writing between 500-800 words.
Paper 2 comprises one or two passages of continuous prose and requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to comprehend, explain, infer, evaluate and summarise.
In 2012, the Singapore General Paper syllabus was modified and given a new syllabus code 8807 (previously, it was syllabus 8806). One difference in the new syllabus is the requirement by examiners that candidates should present conviction, confidence and be convincing in their essays, departing from set-piece essays and memorizing core content.
