George J. Gould House and the Isaac Stern House

The George Gould House was a mansion located at 857 Fifth Avenue on the northeast corner of 67th Street in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. It was constructed in 1906[1] for George Jay Gould I in the French style, replacing the earlier Jay Gould House. Gould's house was designed both to complement and outshine the existing Isaac Stern House that had been erected next door, at 858 Fifth Avenue: under cornices of the same height the Gould house comprised but three floors to the Stern house's modestly-scaled four.

The site is now occupied by a rather nondescript white brick building completed in 1963, which however contains only 17 generously laid-out apartments.[2]
