George Lafayette Carter
George Lafayette Carter (1857-1936) was an American entrepreneur.
Biography
George L. Carter was born near Hillsville, Virginia on January 10, 1857.[1][2][3][4] He owned land in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.[1][4] For example, he owned the land on which East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee was later built, and land in Bristol, Tennessee.[2][5][4] He also created and owned the company towns of Coalwood, West Virginia and Caretta, West Virginia.[1][3][4] He bought some rail tracks and created the Clinchfield Railroad.[2][5]
In 2007, the George L. Carter Railroad Museum opened on the East Tennessee State University campus.[2]
