The George Sikorski Tenement is a house located at Gdanska Street 31, between Pomorsaka Street and Śniadeckich Street in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
History
The house was built in 1902-1903 for the barber George Sikorski;[1] at this time its address was "Danzigerstrasse 20, Bromberg".
It was designed by the architect Fritz Weidner. Fritz Weidner was a German builder who came to Bydgoszcz at the end of the 19th century. He conducted frantic building activity in the city between 1896 and 1914. From 1912, he lived in the house he built for himself at Gdańska 34.
In the same area, Fritz Weidner built houses at the following addresses:
- Mix Ernst tenement and movie theatre at Gdanska St. 10 in 1905;
- Thomas Frankowski Tenement at Gdanska St. 28 in 1897;
- Max Rosental Tenement at Gdanska St. 42 in 1905;
- Ernst Bartsch tenement at Gdańska St.79, in 1898;
- House at Freedom Square 3, in 1903.
During interwar period, the ground floor housed the Edward Kozlowski[2]'s jewelry store. At the end of the 30s, the family Kałamajski moved from building at Gdansk 27 to install a dyeing shop "Tint".
Features
The building represents the style of picturesque architecture, typical of Fritz Weidner projects.[3]
Originally the south peak building had an adorned facade.
