Georges Bakar

George Michel Bakar (born 20 April 1946 in Cairo, Egypt) is Archeparch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. He is the Apostolic Vicar of Jerusalem for the Melkite Church, Patriarchal Vicar of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Alexandria and Protosynkellos of the Patriarch of Antioch of the Melkite Church in Egypt and Sudan. He is also the Patriarchal Grand Prior of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem.

Ecclesiastical career

Georges Bakar studied at the seminary of St. Anna in Harissa (Lebanon) philosophy, then moved to the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik by Beirut and studied theology. His theology degree he put on the Catholic University of Lyon (France). On July 6, 1973, he received the ordination to the priesthood by Archbishop Paul Antaki, from 1978 he worked as rector at Patriarchal College in Cairo. From 2004 to 2006 Bakar was head of the household and financial system for the Archeparchy of Alexandria in Egypt and Sudan.

On 9 February 2006, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Pelusium of Melkite Greeks and appointed Vicar Apostolic of Jerusalem. On 24 March 2006, Bakar was carried ordination by the Patriarch of Antioch Gregory III Laham, BS and the co-consecrators were Archbishop Joseph Jules Zerey and Archbishop Paul Antaki. The inauguration took place on 1 June 2006, at the same time he was appointed Grand Prior of the Patriarchal Orders of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. On 5 January 2008 Bakar was appointed Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria and Patriarch of Antioch in Syncellus for the Melkite Church in Egypt and Sudan.

On the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (Catholic) for the Middle East Archbishop Bakar commented about desire to convene a pan-Arab General Congress. "These patriarchs, archbishops and bishops of all churches of the Middle East should come and discuss the training of future generations of Christians."[1]
