Biography
Early Years
Pellegrini was born in Sparkill, New York to photographer Roger Pellegrini of Italian origin, and actress Maureen Mooney. Georgia’s passion for good, simple food began at an early age, on a boulder by the side of a creek as she caught her trout for breakfast. She grew up on the same land that her great-grandfather owned and worked. That place is called Tulipwood. That connection to the land and the deep satisfaction one gets from manual labor stayed with her through college and even during the years that she strayed onto the path of the world of finance. She received a B.A. of International Relations from Wellesley College, but after a bit of soul searching she decided to leave the cubicle world behind and enrolled in culinary school (French Culinary Institute). Soon she began to work in farm to table restaurants in the U.S. (Gramercy Tavern and Blue Hill at Stone Barns) and France (La Chassagnette), driving heavy farm equipment, and harvesting both meat and plants for dinner. She began befriending many and went on journeys with them, into curing rooms, through the woods, and over the rolling hills of olive oil vineyards. It was during this time that she finally decided it was time to really get at the heart of where our food comes from and head to the source—Mother Nature. She bought a shotgun and set her sights on the cutting edge of culinary creativity intent on pushing the boundaries of American gastronomy.[3]
Books
In her latest book, Modern Pioneering, Pellegrini teaches modern day pioneer skills and "manual literacy". It is a cookbook and backyard gardening and homesteading guide for people who want to grow food efficiently, cook seasonal recipes, or even try foraging, camping, and living off the land. In addition it teaches DIY projects and "superwoman skills". The tagline for the book is "self-sufficiency is the ultimate girl power".
In Girl Hunter, Pellegrini writes about the experience of traveling around the U.S. and abroad to hunt her own meat, in order to step outside the industrial food system. This book is a story of her crazy journey into the real world of organic, local, and sustainable food. She teamed up with veteran hunters to add to the adventures.[4] She writes from the perspective of a classically trained chef, who didn't grow up hunting, and includes close to 100 recipes and vivid detail on the characters she meets along the way. Girl Hunter was named one of the Top 10 Sports Books of 2012 by Booklist, a Best Book of the Month by Amazon, lauded a review by Publishers Weekly and lauded in a review by the Wall Street Journal.[5][6][7][8][9]
In her first book Food Heroes, Pellegrini tells the story of 16 food artisans around the world who are fighting to preserve their traditions. This book is an extension of Pellegrini’s "retro-locavore" food philosophy that harkens back to "Grandma's kitchen". She believes that true culinary satisfaction comes when there is a sense of place behind a meal. Food Heroes was nominated for an IACP award for best culinary writing with recipes.[10][11][12]
Adventure Getaways
Pellegrini is the creator of Adventure Getaways across the country, where she leads women on trips that include a combination of outdoor activities; horseback riding, clay shooting, fly fishing, hunting, ATV riding, falconry.[13][14] Her next adventure getaway that she is hosting is in Tekamah, Nebraska and is fascinating because it is for both men and women. Her getaways are made to help people challenge themselves and to step outside of their comfort zone in a comfortable setting. It’s great to help people expand their limits and to maximize their potential. These getaways allow people with all experience levels do many activities outdoors. They help transform your mind, body, and soul.[15]
