Ghirmay Ghebreslassie (born 14 November 1995) is an Eritrean long distance runner who specialises in the marathon. He won the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China. He is the youngest winner of the marathon at the World Championships.[1][2]
Running career
Ghebreslassie placed 7th at the 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships Junior men's race in Bydgoszcz, Poland.[3] Ghebreslassie also placed 7th at the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships senior men's race in Copenhagen, Denmark.[3] Eritrea won the team competiton but Ghebrelassie was not counted in because he was fourth best of the Eritreans.
On 22 August 2015 Ghebreslassie placed 1st winning the gold medal in the senior men's marathon race at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics competition held in Beijing, China. Ghebreslassie, at 19-years of age, became the youngest ever world marathon winner.[2] In the race he took lead from Lesotho's Tsepo Ramonene Mathibelle at 36km and 1:52 followed by Ethiopian Yemane Tsegay. Ghebreslassie and Tsegay shared lead for a while until at 2:02 Ghebreslassie started to take clear lead and finished first at 2hr 12min 28sec. The race was done in clear conditions and temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius.
