Giancarlo del Monaco

Giancarlo del Monaco, born on 27 December 1943 in the neighbourhood of Venice, Italy, is a stage director primarily known for his opera productions. In 1991, he staged La fanciulla del West at the Metropolitan Opera and went on to direct Stiffelio, Madama Butterfly, Simon Boccanegra and La forza del destino for the company. He has also served as the General Manager for several opera companies and festivals: the Macerata Festival (Italy) from 1986 to 1988 Theater der Bundesstadt (Bonn) from 1992 to 1995 and the Opéra de Nice (France) from 1997 to 2001. Since 2009, he has served as the Artistic Director of the Tenerife Opera Festival.

He is the son of the tenor Mario del Monaco and made his debut as a stage director during 1964 in Siracusa, Italy with a production of Samson et Dalila featuring his father in the leading role.
