Glitch is an Australian television drama series which began screening on ABC1 on 9 July 2015. The series is set in the fictional country town of Yoorana. It is written by Louise Fox, Kris Mrksa and Giula Sandler, directed by Emma Freeman, produced by Ewan Burnett and Louise Fox, with Executive Producers Tony Ayres and Debbie Lee.[1]

On 26 October 2015, ABC TV renewed the show for a second series.

Plot

James Hayes (Patrick Brammall) is a small town police man who is called to the local cemetery in the middle of the night after six people have inexplicably risen from the dead in perfect health. With no memory of their identities, they are determined to discover who they are and what has happened to them. James recognises one of them and along with local doctor Elishia McKellar (Genevieve O'Reilly), struggles to keep the case hidden from his colleagues, his family and the world. The six people are all linked in some way and the search begins for someone who knows the truth about how and why they have returned. [2]

Themes

Glitch has been compared with French TV series Les Revenants, but it has a distinctly Australian feel. It has been described[3] as Australian gothic, due in part to shooting during the summer nights in the historic Victorian town of Castlemaine. “It was once a powerful affluent place because of the gold, and now it’s not. The idea of being past its use-by date added to the themes and the feel of the show.”

The show has a typically Australian laconic charm. For instance, on discovering Yoorana’s undead, the policeman James Hayes' first thought is that they’ve been out on an all-night bender. “It’s a more reasonable conclusion to come to,” actor Patrick Brammall says. “If we were American, we might go: ‘You’re back from the dead’, but in Australia, that would be the very, very last thing you’d assume.”

After the debut screening of the first episode, the ABC made the entire series available online via iView.
