Gogunda is a small town and tehsil headquarters located about 35 km in north-west from Udaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is situated on a high mountain in Aravalli hills and is reached by crossing a difficult mountain pass.

History

Gogunda was the capital of Mewar for some years, when Udai Singh shifted his base here and left Chittor for safety purpose. Udai Singh also died at Gogunda in 1572 and Maharana Pratap's Raj Tilak (coronation) was performed here.

It was near Gogunda that the Battle of Haldighati in 1576 was fought between the armies of Maharana Pratap and the Mughal Army under Raja Man Singh.

In past centuries and during British Raj, the village of Gogunda was the seat of a feudal estate administered by a family belonging to the Jhala clan of Rajputs. The estate was part of the princely state of Mewar, and the family were among the major landed barons of that principality. It comprised 75 villages, encompassing a population, in 1901, of 7,708 and a revenue of Rs.24,000/-.

Temples

Gogunda abounds with Hindu and Jain temples. Gogunda is a small village in rawliya khurd, and home to Rathore GANGAWAT and Chundawat Rajputs. It is also famous for 'haldigati' war.

Roadways

State Highway 32 ( RJ SH 32) is a State Highway in Rajasthan state of India that connects Chawa in Pali district of Rajasthan with Ganoda in Banswara district of Rajasthan. The total length of RJ SH 32 is 219 km.

This highway connects RJ SH 16 in Sadri to RJ SH 10 in Banswara. It also connects National Highway 76 in Gogunda to National Highway 8 Udaipur and then to National Highway 113 in Banswara. It is crossing different state highways on the way to Banswara RJ SH 62 in Sadri, RJ SH 50 in Udaipur, RJ SH 53 in Salumbar and RJ SH 54 in Aspur. Other cities and towns on this highway are: Ranakpur, Gogunda, Udaipur, Jaisamand, Kherad, Salumbar, Aspur, Sabala, Lohariya and Ganoda.
