The Golestan University is a major institute of higher education located in Gorgan, a large city bordering the Caspian Sea, in the province of Golestan, in north-eastern Iran. In 2008 GU was established by separation of Faculty of Sciences from the Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and joining Faculty of Engineering.

At present, Golestan University is spread over 3 campuses housing 4 faculties and research centers:
- Faculty of Sciences
- Faculty of Engineering (Gorgan Branch)
- Faculty of Engineering (Ali-Abad Branch)
- Faculty of Humanities
