Gonzalo de Carbajal (1580s-1661) was a Spanish nobleman, General, Mayor of Buenos Aires and Lieutenant General of Santa Fe during Viceroyalty of Peru.[1]

Biography

Born in Ciudad de los Reyes, Lima, Perú,[2] son of Pedro López Valero and María de Carbajal (spanish), he was married to María Salas daughter of Francisco de Salas Reynoso and Leonor Correa.[3] The Capt. Gonzalo Carbajal colleague of Hernandarias de Saavedra,[4] also met to command an armed contingent against Indians, to help of Juan de Garay,[5] son of the founder, in the city of Corrientes, the mission was a failure and Carabajal, had to retire with his men. He fulfilled roles and expeditions in almost all provinces as Salta, Corrientes, Santa Fe.[6] In 1612 he was appointed Faithful Executor of the Cabildo.[7] And then in 1628 was appointed Alcalde of Buenos Aires.[8] On November 9, 1631, he was appointed Judge Campaign.[9]

On May 21, 1622 Carbajal was appointed Lieutenant Governor in The Province of Santa Fe.[10] Some time later he served as Lieutenant Governor and General in Buenos Aires. He also fulfilled the functions of Treasurer, Judge, Council and Royal Official in the Río de la Plata.[11]

Gonzalo Carbajal had owned one of the first pulpería, in the Río de la Plata, where the government withdrew the permit admission to black people in their establishment.[12]
