Goraghwood railway station

Goraghwood railway station a closed station in County Armagh in Northern Ireland; it was opened in 1854 and closed in 1965.

Goraghwood was opened on 6 March 1854 on the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway. From 1864 the Newry and Armagh Railway (N&A) opened ran trains as well to its own temporary terminus just outside Armagh until it started using the Ulster Railway of Armagh railway station in 1865.[1] The line to Armagh closed in 1955.

Goraghwood was an important junction on the Great Northern Railway of Ireland system located on the Dublin to Belfast railway line. Goraghwood being in proximity to Newry, but at a higher elevation also had a branch line to the town station of Newry Edward Street and the seaside resort and port of Warrenpoint. Goraghwood was on the branch via Markethill to Armagh.

Closure

The Ulster Transport Authority closed Goraghwood to freight on 4 January 1965 and to passengers on 15 February 1965.[2]

The Enterprise service just rushes through the site of the former station running between Dublin Connolly and Belfast Central. Newry and Craigmore Viaduct are located south of Goraghwood. Passengers on board the trains can see the upcoming closed line from Warrenpoint.
