Sir Robert Grant Hammond, KNZM, is a judge of the New Zealand Court of Appeal and from 1 December 2010, the President of the New Zealand Law Commission.[1]

Education

Justice Hammond graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Laws and Master of Philosophy from the University of Auckland and a Master of Laws from the University of Illinois.

Career

Before his appointment to the judiciary, Justice Hammond was a partner in New Zealand law firm Tompkins Wake & Co. He was also a Professor of Law at a number of American and Canadian universities (Illinois, Dalhousie University, and the University of Alberta), as well as serving as the Chairman of a Canadian law reform agency before being appointed Professor and Dean of Law at the University of Auckland. He was appointed to the bench of the High Court of New Zealand in 1992 and as a judge of the New Zealand Court of Appeal in January 2004.

In the 2011 Queen's Birthday Honours List, Hammond was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the law.
