The Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) was until 2015 known as Warangal Municipal Corporation.[1] It is the urban planning agency that oversees cities of Warangal, Hanamakonda and Kazipet.[2] Its geographical area covers most of that administered by the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority.[3]

History

Established in 1899, it was declared a major Municipality in 1934 and then, in 1959, became a Special Grade Municipality. The upgrading to the status of Warangal Municipal Corporation occurred in 1994.[4]

Smart City

The citizens of Warangal can hope for better facilities as the Central government shortlisted it under the ‘Smart City’ programme.[5] The programme enables the city to secure funds from the Central Government in strengthening and extension of existing services and infrastructure in Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet – tri-cities.
