Charlie Sloth (born Donell Barton[2] 20 August 1987) is an English Hip hop rapper, Producer, actor, TV presenter and DJ who was born and raised in Camden Town, North London, England.[3]
He is a DJ on BBC Radio 1, presenting The Rap Show from 10pm - 1am on Saturday evenings. He is also a presenter on BBC Radio 1Xtra where he presents the weekday drivetime show from 4pm - 7pm. Charlie Sloth is known for his trademark show, Fire In The Booth, in which MCs from grime and hip-hop, including Wretch 32, K Koke and Devlin, come into the studio and freestyle on his show.
Sloth is also a TV presenter and has presented Channel 4's House Party series, plus other shows on BBC One, BBC Three and online. He also founded record label Grimey Limey, which has been instrumental to the careers of Bugzy Malone and Potter Payper. Bugzy's Walk with Me EP peaked at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart.[4]
Sloth's weekday drivetime show is the most listened to radio show on BBC Radio 1Xtra.
Career
2004-2007: Early career
In 2004, a young Sloth appeared in BBC Three documentary series, Tower Block Dreams.
His career began in 2007 after he won "Most Original Video" at the CraveFest awards Canada for music video, "Guided Tour of Camden".[5]
2008-current: Best Rap/Hip-hop/R&B Unsigned Artist & Hard Being Good
In 2008 it was reported that Sloth "Best Rap/Hip-Hop/R&B Unsigned Artist" at The CravesFest awards in Canada.[6] Sloth released 'Hard Being Good' in 2008.[7]
Sloth won 'Best Radio Show' at the 2012 & 2013 Urban Music Awards and was nominated for two Sony Radio Academy Awards for 'Best Entertainment Programme' and 'Music Personality of the Year' in 2013.
It was announced on 27 July 2013 that Charlie Sloth would be taking over from Tim Westwood on Saturday Nights on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra, which is the flagship time for new urban music.
As of February 2016, Charlie Sloth does 6 radio shows a week for the BBC. [8]
