H. Vasanthakumar (born April 14, 1950) is an Indian entrepreneur and politician from Tamil Nadu, India. He is the owner of Vasanth & Co, one of the largest durable goods retail chains in Tamil Nadu. He also owns Vasanth TV.[1] He was elected to Tamil Nadu Assembly from Nanguneri constituency in 2006 election.[2][3]
Personal life
Shri.H.Vasanthakumar was born in Agastheeswaram in Kanyakumari district to Shri. Hari Krishnaperumal Nadar and Thangammai on 14th April in the year 1950.
Vasanth&Co
He started his career as a salesman in the yearly 70’s. In the year 1978 he started “Vasanth & Co”, which has grown to be a network of 61 showrooms operating in Tamil Nadu and one each in Bangalore and Pondicherry in its 38 years of existence. With an annual turnover of 7000 million it encompasses several kinds of global reputed brands.
Vasanth TV
Vasanth TV was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi in May 2008 at her residence. Some of the programmes that air on Vasanth TV are ‘Manpesum sarithiram' and ‘Thayillamal Naanillai’ etc. Vasanthakumar's own program “Vetripadikkattu” has been telecasted on Vasanth TV every day at 7.00 am and 7.00 pm. It targets the youth audience, especially in Tamil Nadu.
Noble Writer
He has been a good reader since his childhood days and had authored a book entitled ‘Vetripadi Kattu’, which was released on 17th September 2006 by world-renowned Actor Rajnikanth and his wife Latha Rajnikanth. His writings mostly targets in building self-confidence among the Youth. His next work entitled ‘Vetripadikkattu’ is all set to be released on 15th February 2015 in Chennai.
Political Life
He is a staunch follower of the Congress from his youth-hood and has accepted Shri K. Kamarajar as his political Guru. In the political arena he owns a finest and magnus identity, where it is difficult for others to match his surplus attitude, significance of discipline, unanimous approach, kind words, savior of all time, dapper appearance, feather touch care with unfold console, everlasting smile and above all a down to earth person. He seems to have been born with an innate keenness in the field probably he is the only opus and dynamic personality, who balances as a business icon as well as a politician. He is as dedicated to his political life as he is to the business and enjoys the distinction of being one of the few politicians who sponsor their own political expenses. He had served as MLA from the Nanguneri Constituency of Tirunelveli district between 2006 and 2011. He is the Vice-President of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and also the Chairman of the TNCC Traders cell. His role models in politics are Shri.K.Kamaraj and none other than the Congress Party President Madam Sonia Gandhiji, the guiding light in his political career.
Social Worker
He is a perennial social worker, who has set up free tuition centers for poor students, launched interest free loan schemes for the welfare of the hawkers and pavement vendors, distributed cycles with stainless steel thermo-tea drum to the poor under self-employment and much more for the welfare of the people especially in his constituency. Recently he had organized ‘Mega Job Fair’s in Kanyakumari district to provide Job opportunities to the eligible Youth of the district.
Versatile personality
Though hailed from a humble origin, today he has emerged as an ocean and still holds the fire in heart to achieve greater heights and even roaring high to spread and expand like an ocean. He own many crowns on his name like a walk-in Business Icon from its encyclopedia, a humble Politician where he is the savior of the people, a noble Writer, Editor and Publisher of Intraya Inthiyan, a monthly magazine, a media player and above all a personality with humanistic approach towards the fellow human beings. Above all he has the vision in his eyes and accomplished the mission from his heart by grooming as a front runner and pioneer in the arena of Business, Media, Politics, Literature & Social Welfare and many more to come in the near future.
MLA
Vasanthakumar won the 2006 Tamil Nadu assembly election to become a MLA, competing against S.P. Sooryakumar of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He gave an assurance to the voters that if his coalition comes to power, the ambitious project of establishing a Special Economic Zone at Nanguneri with hi-tech park would be considered.[4]
