HNK Rijeka Reserves and Academy
HNK Rijeka Academy are the youth team of HNK Rijeka. There are a total of eleven age categories within the academy, the oldest being the Juniori (under-19) and youngest the Morčići (under-8). Rijeka's football academy was officially founded in 1972. Currently, there are approximately 400 youth in the academy.[1]
HNK Rijeka II are the reserve team of HNK Rijeka. Rijeka II was formed in June 2014 and initially replaced the club's U-19 team. From the 2014–15 season, Rijeka II competes in Croatia’s reorganised Third Division. The reserve teams are unable to play in the same division as their senior teams. Therefore, Rijeka II is ineligible for promotion to the Prva HNL and may progress only up to Druga HNL as long as the senior team is in Prva HNL. Reserve team is also not permitted to enter the Croatian Cup. The reserve team is intended to be the final step between the Academy and the first-team squad. It is made up of promising youngsters under the age of 21, with up to five players over 21 as well as five foreign (non-EU) players eligible to play each week.[2][3]
