Haider Aziz Safwi is an Indian politician and the present Minister for Correctional administration in the Government of West Bengal. he served as director general of police(fire and emergency services),government of West Bengal.he retired in 2005 [1] He is also an MLA, elected from the Uluberia Purba constituency in the West Bengal state assembly election, 2011. As an I.P.S officer, Safwi was respected for his honesty,integrity and fairness. He held important positions like d.g.fire and emergency services,d.g enforcement branch,sp 24parganas(undivided),deputy commissioner detective department(kolkata police) among others. He is a recipient of the presidents police medal for distinguished service and the police medal for meritorious service. Safwi was inspired by Mamata Banerjee's honesty and the service she had rendered to the people,specially the farmers in singur. This was what prompted him to join the party in 2009 post his retirement from the I.P.S. He contested the 2011 assembly elections on a tmc ticket from uluberia purba and won that seat by a margin of over 19000 votes following which he was inducted as a cabinet minister in the Mamata Banerjee government on 20 May 2011.
