Haji Muhammad Ali Khan Zarnavai was first khan of Shirvan. He was appointed by Nadir Shah in 1748, during his reconquest of Daghestan. After assassination of latter, nomadic feudals of Shirvan supported rival princes Muhammad Said khan and Aghasi khan of Khanchoban tribe. Khan was killed in a battle in 1763 and his capital New Shemakha was seized. Muhammad Said khan and Aghasi khan started diarchy in Shirvan.
