The handball tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be held from 6 to 21 August at the Future Arena in the Barra Olympic Park.[1]
Events
Two sets of medals will be awarded in the following events:
- Men's handball (12 teams)
- Women's handball (12 teams)
Qualification
Each National Olympic Committee may enter up to one men's and one women's team in the handball tournaments.[2]

^ 1. Because Norway have already qualified for the Olympic Games by winning the 2015 World Championship title, the unused berth from the European Championship has been awarded to Spain.

Men's competition
The competition consists of two stages; a group stage followed by a knockout stage.
Group stage
Teams are divided into two groups of six nations, playing every team in their group once. Two points for a victory, one - for a draw. Top four teams per group qualify for the quarter-finals.
