Casting

In December 2009, The Futon Critic confirmed the casting of Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin and Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields, as well as the addition of Laura Leighton as Ashley Marin, Nia Peeples as Pam Fields, Roark Critchlow as Tom Marin, and Bianca Lawson as Maya.[1][2]

Development

Characterization

Hanna has a beautiful heart shaped face complimented with piercing baby blue eyes, full lips and dimpled smile. She has a curvaceous frame with slim, shapely legs. Her golden blonde hair was long; she cut it short before the start of senior year in Season 3. Her skin is light with a milk and rose complexion which sums up her innocent and playful personality. In Season 5, Hanna again, after Alison comes back cuts her hair short with black highlights and has a curvy body. Hanna does this because she doesn't want to look like Alison or be associated with her, but still has to help cover and take care of her. Prior to the "Pilot", Hanna was a larger form of herself, and because of her increased weight gained the nickname 'Hefty Hanna' from Alison.

Television storylines

Season One

Once-chubby Hanna has transformed herself into the current "It girl," but still battles the urge to binge. Shoplifting gives her a less-fattening thrill, but when she gets caught, the charges are dismissed only because her mother, Ashley(Leighton), takes matters into her own hands, eager to keep her own reputation and the image of her daughter untarnished.

Season Two

After suffering a broken heart from Caleb’s betrayal, Hanna will find herself confronted again with the man who caused it all. Will she be able to forgive him and reconnect, or is their relationship a thing of the past? Caleb finds his mother, leaving Hanna to go to Arizona, and they make up after Hanna demands that his foster mom kept sending him cheques. They are still happily in love. With the possibility of finding out about Mona’s deception, Hanna’s got a lot of complications to deal with before she can find peace of mind. Hanna and Caleb reunite, only to find him going to California to visit his mother. Hanna's daddy issues continue as she breaks up the wedding between him and Isabel, with Hanna revealing her father and mother had hooked up before the wedding. With the other three girls using Caleb to help discover A's identity, Hanna is worried. But can she tell Caleb to stop without revealing the real issue? Fortunately, Hanna saves Caleb just when the officers were about to find the school files "A" planted on his laptop. Their relationship is safe for now.

Season Three

Hanna is determined to find answers about Alison's death by visiting Mona at Radley Sanitarium. She continues to hold a relationship with Caleb while also overcoming Mona's betrayal. She is also growing closer to Wren who works at the Radley Sanitarium. Caleb doesn't approve of Hanna's visits to Mona, so he threatens Mona to leave Hanna alone. Later in the season, Hanna and Caleb break-up. Hanna is also accused of stealing Alison's body by Officer Wilden. Hanna and Caleb later get back together and continue their relationship secretly so "A" wouldn't mess with it.

Season Four

Hanna is feeling the aftereffect of the fire, swearing that she saw Ali and wondering if she can trust Mona or not. After Spencer finds Hanna's mom's cell phone in Wilden's casket, she start to worry about her mother and starts to get suspicious that her mother may have killed Wilden. Hanna mom comes home and it's a bittersweet homecoming since Hanna thinks her mom may be a killer. She finds evidence such as a pair of muddy high heeled shoes and agun in her mother bag. Her mother gets arrested and sent to jail, which makes everything go wrong for Hanna.

Season Five

With Alison’s return, Hanna struggles with her identity and individuality. Determined to be her own person, Hanna gets a makeover. Her insecurities are not helped when Caleb returns to Rosewood, with secrets of his own, and the pair begin drinking. Hanna’s drinking causes a rift between her and her friends, especially Aria, when Ella’s fiance hits on her. When Caleb finally opens up to Hanna, things between them get back to normal. Hanna is deeply affected by Mona’s apparent death. Being accepted into her choice of colleges, Hanna scrambles to collect enough money when her father refuses to pay for her education. Desperate, and at a loss of other options, Hanna enrolls in a beauty pageant for the cash prize, only to fail miserably. Hanna also deals with her mother’s infidelity, while trying to foil A’s attempts to frame her for Mona’s murder. ‘A’ finally succeeds in putting Hanna behind bars as an accomplice to Mona’s murder. Hanna along with the other girls, are being transported to prison when they are abducted and held captive by ‘A’ in his dollhouse.
