Hannah Gadsby (born 12 January 1978) is an Australian comedian. She quickly rose to prominence after winning the national final of the Raw Comedy competition for new comedians in 2006. She has toured internationally and appeared on Australian and New Zealand television.

Television

Gadsby co-starred on the ABC television network show, Adam Hills Tonight (formerly known as Adam Hills in Gordon Street Tonight). She had regular segments called 'On This Day' and 'Hannah Has A Go' and also featured on the couch, contributing as host Adam Hills interviews his guests.[1] The show ceased production following the end of its third season in July 2013.[2]

She has also appeared as a guest on Good News Week, Spicks and Specks,[1] and New Zealand TV 3's 7 Days.

Gadsby has written and presented two documentary specials for the Artscape program on ABC TV, The NGV Story (2011)[3] and Hannah Gadsby Goes Domestic (2010).[4] She has further written and presented a three-part series on ABC TV, Hannah Gadsby's Oz, which aired in March 2014.[5]

She featured as Hannah, a fictional version of herself, in the third series of fellow comedian Josh Thomas's series Please Like Me in 2015.

Comedy festivals

Gadsby is a regular on the local and international comedy festival circuit. Below is a listing of some of her appearances.

The arts

Although Hannah is best known for her pure comedy work, she also combines her comedy talents with her art qualifications (she has a degree in Art History and Curatorship) by presenting comedy art tours in conjunction with the National Gallery of Victoria. Since 2009, Gadsby has presented tours with themes such as paintings of the Holy Virgin, Dadaism, Modernism, Impressionism and the nude in art. Gadsby also gives talks on art and opens exhibitions.[7]

Personal life

Gadsby grew up in Smithton in Tasmania, the youngest of five children.[8][9] She attended Smithton High School from 1990 to 1995, and graduated from the Australian National University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Curatorship.[10]

She is openly gay and often refers to her sexuality in her stand-up routines.[8][11]

Community work

Gadsby is an active supporter of various charities. Organisations she has assisted include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Melbourne, Edmund Rice Camps of Victoria and the Sacred Heart Mission.[12][13]
