Hanover Housing Association (Hanover) is a leading provider of housing and services for people aged 55 and over in England.[1]

Housing and services for people in later life

Hanover believes that a good home, choice, and a supportive community are key to enjoying later life. With 19,000 properties in approximately 600 locations for both rent and sale, the organisation has an ongoing investment plan to ensure its properties meet residents’ expectations. It also provides a range of services that encourage wellbeing, provide choice and help people to stay independent.

Hanover works with carefully selected partners to foster and promote the wellbeing of residents. The Hanover on Call service provides a round-the-clock response and on-site staff have direct contact with residents.[2] Hanover’s ‘Be Wise’ services help residents with benefits, money-saving advice and adaptations, supporting them as their care or support needs change.[3]

The organisation also puts people in touch with each other and with wider services to encourage neighbourliness, reduce isolation and promote community services, such as helping residents to get online.

Housing options

Hanover offers a choice of housing options for people aged 55 and over across a wide variety of locations with access to different levels of care and with a variety of tenure options (rental, leasehold sales, and shared ownership)

Retirement housing – enables residents to enjoy independence while having access to help and support, according to their individual needs. These homes are available to rent, with some estates offering properties for sale depending on location and availability.[4]

Extra care housing – self-contained properties, with an on-site manager during working hours and, typically, access to a 24/7 on-site care team. Shared facilities include a restaurant, lounge, gardens and laundry. Many locations also provide a shop, hair and beauty salon, cinema and fitness suite. All Extra Care estates offer properties to rent, and some locations also offer properties to buy.[5]

Downsizer housing – a new type of housing for the active over 55s looking to move to a more appropriately-sized home for their needs. These aspirational sale and rental properties include high quality specifications with contemporary design and are also fully accessible. [6]

Governance

Hanover Housing Association is regulated by the Regulation Committee of the Homes and Community Agency (HCA). The organisation is led by a Board of non-executive members and Hanover’s Chief Executive. The current Chairman is Dr Stuart Burgess MBE and the Chief Executive is Dame Clare Tickell.[7]
