Hans Raj Model School is a school in Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi, India, which was started in 1966 with Mr. T. R. Gupta as the Principal.[1] It is based on the ideals of the DAV movement whose creed and guiding spirit are the words of Maharishi Swami Dayanand.

The school buildings consist of three and four storey buildings set amidst green lawns. The Kindergarten is housed in a separate 1.5-acre (6,100 m2) campus.

In June 2010, the school was conferred with the Science Intellect Trophy award by the Science Olympiad Foundation. The principal of the school 'Dr. Rita Rajen Kumar' was conferred with the Best Principal award for the continued support rendered towards popularisation of Science, Maths and IT.

Mrs. Heemal H Bhat is now the Principal of the school, it is believed that school will achieve new heights in her tenure as principal.

Vanasthali

Environmental conservation is a part of the school curriculum. A 6-acre (24,000 m2)site adjacent to the school has been converted into a children's forest with a garden of Good-Will International in which students and dignitaries have planted around 4000 trees.

Educational approach

Facilities include computer aided education, audio visual aids, multimedia systems, L.C.D Projectors. Internet technologies are being included in the classrooms in partnership with 'Classteacher.com' which is providing a virtual school service under which teachers, parents and students of class X and XII can come together on a single platform using their individual passwords. There is online availability of lesson plans, homework assignments, examination schedules, results, attendance record, school notice, and digital library services.

Hobbies and activities

There are 45 activities and hobbies organised in the Senior School and 22 in the Junior School in the fields of science, art and culture. Activities include computing, swimming, skating, yoga, taekwondo, music and dance.

Quality centre

The quality centre takes up student-based projects aimed at their betterment in coordination with the India Quality Foundation. The current project focuses on student of classes VI - VIII who are either not doing well in academics or in non-scholastic activities. Counselling sessions are held with these students.

House system

The school has 10 houses, with each being headed by a House-warden who is assisted by a group of teachers and prefects.

Extra curricular

Anubhuti

Anubhuti is a club for creative and talented students, teachers and parents who wish to appreciate and promote India's cultural heritage in art, music, dance, drama, painting and sculpture. Exposure is provided through interactions with artists, dancers and instrumentalists along with organisation of exhibitions and performances.

The club was inaugurated by Col. Bikram Singh, Director, Military Operations in 1999. Mrs. Anita Sharma, P.G.T. Mathematics, is the teacher in charge of Anubhuti. A talk was delivered by Dr. V.K. Srivastav, Prof. of Mathematics, Delhi University in 1999, on the role of teachers in controlling ill effects of media on young minds.

Swimming

The school has a swimming pool with change rooms and a visiting gallery to accommodate 400 viewers.

Sports Academy

There is a skating rink, cricket & football ground, tennis grounds, gymnasium, taekwondo rink, junior and senior department basketball courts aside from a swimming pool. There are evening classes for the sports academy. Hansraj students have been winning at national as well international level in many sports including table tennis, lawn tennis, skating, cricket, basketball, gymnastics, handball, golf etc.

IT

More than 60 of the teachers from the school's Senior Secondary Department (including the principal) have been trained as Computer Professionals in a training course conducted by Intel. Four of the teachers who attended the Advanced Course conducted by Intel are now qualified to train other teachers. The school has recently also adopted the digital classroom of classteacher Learning Systems.

Multimedia lab

The Multimedia lab of the school has Pentium III microprocessors, one maths lab and a teacher resource centre. Teachers made a PowerPoint presentation about the CBSE syllabus.

A virtual school has been created on the internet with the help of Clasteacher Learning Systems, which gives the syllabus, homework assignments, extra assignments, and sample papers for weak and bright students. Parents can view students attendance or marks obtained in examinations.
