The harlequin gecko, Tukutuku rakiurae [2] (formerly Hoplodactylus rakiurae),[3] is a species of gecko endemic to Stewart Island/Rakiura in the far south of New Zealand where they were discovered in 1969.[4] In terms of distribution they are one of the southernmost gecko species in the world.[5]
Conservation status
As of 2012 the Department of Conservation (DOC) classified the harlequin gecko as Nationally Vulnerable under the New Zealand Threat Classification System.[1]
